4700 visitors made the trip to Cannes in the south of France this February for VMworld Europe 2009. The sunny skies of the Côte d'Azur took some of the edge off the grey economic outlook, contributing to an event that remained cheerful and optimistic. The "full virtual" revolution is under way; business applications are turning into services and a new information systems ecosystem, promising increased productivity and lower costs for the enterprise, is becoming a reality. From the data center, to the desktop to the cell phone, VMware and its partners demonstrated how to transform the enterprise through end-to-end virtualisation. Paul Maritz, VMware CEO, introduced vSphere, VMware's future data center OS, as "a new kind of operating system... a software mainframe" in his keynote speech. The next release of ESX will include storage and network virtualisation features based on partnerships with EMC and Cisco. Meanwhile Double-Take Software continues to enhance its business continuity offerings for both physical and virtual environments, a key element in a dependable cloud infrastructure.
